Hawkes Bay
For sun lovers the Hawkes Bay region, with an average of over 6 hours of sunshine per day, is the place to travel to. On the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand this area has the twin cities of Napier and Hastings as its main centres. Napier, having been flattened by the 1931 earthquake, was totally rebuilt and is now famous for its art deco architecture.
In addition to this the area is one of New Zealand's most famous wine-producing regions, and over 30 of the country's best vineyards, some with accommodation on site, being found here. Combined with gourmet food, many art galleries, craft studios, beautiful waterfronts and beaches this ensures the days are fun-filled with activities. If taking a break from the cultural side of life the Cape Kidnappers gannet colony is another of the great sites of the Hawkes Bay.
