Q1. Should I take my rental car on the ferry?
Some rental car companies do not allow their rental cars on the Wellington to Picton ferry crossing. If this is the case, they will provide you with another rental car once you reach your destination, so you do not need to book your rental car on the ferry crossing. However, if your rental car company does allow its cars to be taken on the ferry, it is certainly easier and faster to take the car on the ferry rather than to: locate vehicle drop-off zone; walk to rental car counter in arrivals terminal (or other location in city); complete de-hire paperwork; move bags to departures terminal; check-in baggage; board ferry; then, at the other end, unboard ferry; collect baggage from luggage carousel; go to rental car hire counter; sign new paperwork; and take baggage to vehicle!

Q2. Are the driver and passengers included with the cost of a vehicle?
No, there is an individual charge for the vehicle plus the cost of each person travelling.
Q3. How long does the journey take?
Both Interislander and Bluebridge sailings take between 3 hours and 10 minutes and 3.5 hours, travelling the scenic route throuogh the Marlborough Sounds.
Q4. How do I get to the Interislander terminals in Wellington and Picton?
The Interislander Terminal, Wellington
This terminal is located approximately 3km from the city centre on Aotea Quay, next to the motorway on State Highway One. (There is a shuttle bus from Platform nine, Wellington Railway Station, 50 minutes prior to each sailing - cost NZ$2 per person aged five and over). Passengers requiring connections to the airport should take the shuttle bus to the railway station, then follow signs to the bus terminal. There are regular buses from the bus terminal to the airport. The journey time to the airport takes approximately 30 minutes.
The Picton Terminal
This terminal can be reached from either Auckland Street or London Quay. Vehicle check-in is via Kent Street.
Q5. How do I get to the Bluebridge terminals in Wellington and Picton?
In Wellington, the Bluebridge terminal is conveniently located in the central city opposite Wellington Railway Station and only a short distance from a range of accommodation options. If you are heading south towards Wellington, take the Aotea Quay exit off the motorway and follow it round past the imposing Westpac Trust stadium on your right. The terminal is approximately one kilometre further on your left.
In Picton, the Bluebridge terminal is less than a kilometre from Picton town centre - for foot passengers a shuttle service is available from the i-Site (The Foreshore, Picton). If you are driving north on State Highway one towards Picton, turn left at Kent Street and travel less than a kilometer until you reach the roundabout and Bluebridge terminal ahead on your left.
Q6. What parking facilities are available at the ferry terminals?
Wellington and Picton
There is space to park up and wait for your ferry sailing at both terminals. There is no long term parking available on site but there are plenty of parking options in Wellington City and in Picton.
Q7. How many bags can I take on a ferry?
Small hand baggage can be taken onboard ferries at the owner's risk.
Larger baggage, including backpacks, must be checked-in at the Wellington or Picton terminals. Baggage can then be collected from the carousels at the arrival port. For the Interislander, the allowance is two pieces of baggage per person, weighing up to 32kg per item and no more than 200 linear cm (height + length + width). For Bluebridge, the allowance is two pieces of baggage per person, weighing up to 30kg in total. Excess baggage may be conveyed subject to availability and additional charges. Please note that Interislander do not accept baggage exceeding 50kg or 350 linear cm.

Q9. How far in advance can I book?
Ferry reservations are generally open six months in advance. If you are traveling at Easter, Labour Day or over New Zealand's summer holiday period (from mid-December to the end of February), you should book as soon as you know your approximate travel dates. If they change, you can always amend them free of charge.
Q10. How do I change my New Zealand ferry booking?
For Bluebridge bookings, providing the same fare type is available, your reservation can be changed once for no additional charge. Any subsequent changes made with Experience New Zealand Travel, will incur an amendment fee of NZ$15.00 per change. You can amend or change your booking by emailing us at email@example.com with your new ferry sailing time preference or any other booking amendments. Please be aware that any changes must be made at least 24 hours prior to the time of check-in, otherwise changes cannot be made. For Bluebridge bookings, cancellations made more than 24 hours prior to the time of check-in will incur a 50% cancellation fee.
