New Zealand ferry FAQs and tips

Tips for ferry travel

Vehicles
If you are traveling on the ferry with a vehicle, ensure that you select the correct vehicle type and dimensions. Most cars, vans and 4WDs are under 5.5m in long and 1.6m high. If your vehicle is larger than this, you will need the exact dimensions (length and height) to ensure that the right amount of space is booked for your vehicle on your particular New Zealand ferry crossing.

Trucks
If you have a truck that weighs more than 2500kg please select the appropriate vehicle option (Truck >2500kg) in the booking form and we will contact you to confirm the price as it is determined by the exact weight of the truck.

Q1. Should I take my rental car on the ferry?

Some rental car companies do not allow their rental cars on the Wellington to Picton ferry crossing. If this is the case, they will provide you with another rental car once you reach your destination, so you do not need to book your rental car on the ferry crossing. However, if your rental car company does allow its cars to be taken on the ferry, it is certainly easier and faster to take the car on the ferry rather than to: locate vehicle drop-off zone; walk to rental car counter in arrivals terminal (or other location in city); complete de-hire paperwork; move bags to departures terminal; check-in baggage; board ferry; then, at the other end, unboard ferry; collect baggage from luggage carousel; go to rental car hire counter; sign new paperwork; and take baggage to vehicle!
Ferry policies of all the major rental car companies are listed here.

Q2. Are the driver and passengers included with the cost of a vehicle?

No, there is an individual charge for the vehicle plus the cost of each person travelling. See Interislander fares and Bluebridge fares for prices.

Q3. How long does the journey take?

The journey time (from Wellington to Picton and from Picton to Wellington) on the Interislander vessels is three hours and, on the Bluebridge vessels, is three hours and twenty minutes.

Q4. How do I get to the Interislander terminals in Wellington and Picton?

The Interislander Terminal, Wellington
This terminal is located approximately 3km from the city centre on Aotea Quay, next to the motorway on State Highway One. (There is a shuttle bus from Platform nine, Wellington Railway Station, 50 minutes prior to each sailing - cost NZ$2 per person aged five and over). Passengers requiring connections to the airport should take the shuttle bus to the railway station, then follow signs to the bus terminal. There are regular buses from the bus terminal to the airport. The journey time to the airport takes approximately 30 minutes.

The Picton Terminal
This terminal can be reached from either Auckland Street or London Quay. Vehicle check-in is via Kent Street.

Q5. How do I get to the Bluebridge terminals in Wellington and Picton?

In Wellington, the Bluebridge terminal is conveniently located in the central city opposite Wellington Railway Station and only a short distance from a range of accommodation options. If you are heading south towards Wellington, take the Aotea Quay exit off the motorway and follow it round past the imposing Westpac Trust stadium on your right. The terminal is approximately one kilometre further on your left.

In Picton, the Bluebridge terminal is less than a kilometre from Picton town centre - for foot passengers a shuttle service is available from the i-Site (The Foreshore, Picton). If you are driving north on State Highway one towards Picton, turn left at Kent Street and travel less than a kilometer until you reach the roundabout and Bluebridge terminal ahead on your left.

Q6. What parking facilities are available at the ferry terminals?

Interislander terminals

Wellington
Short-term parking of up to 30 minutes is available, free of charge. Please note, though, that space is limited and in great demand, especially during peak times. Limited long-term Pay and Display parking is also available, at a cost of NZ$10 per calendar day (or part thereof). Long-term parks cannot be pre-booked; if you are travelling at peak times, such as during school holidays, Easter or Christmas, please do not rely on being able to use the long-term parking facilities. Two Pay and Display vending machines are located centrally in the car park. The machines accept coins and credit cards only. Place the parking ticket face up on the vehicle dashboard. Parking is at the owners' risk.

Picton
Port Marlborough provides 60-minute car parking near the Picton terminal entrance, free of charge. Longer-term parking is available near the Old Railway Station. This is Pay and Display and costs NZ$1 per hour, or NZ$5 per day. Secure parking is available at the BP Gateway Service Station, located 400m from the terminal (phone 03 573 6105), at a cost of approximately NZ$12 per day (prices are subject to change without notice). Bookings are recommended.

Marlborough Sounds Storage provides covered vehicle storage, including a pick-up/drop-off service, for a minimum charge of NZ$30 for 1-2 nights (prices are subject to change without notice). Simply park in the terminal carpark, collect an envelope from the Interislander ticket counter, fill out your details and hand in the keys and envelope to counter staff. The vehicle will then be collected from the terminal, stored as required, and returned at the time and date specified. Bookings are recommended.

Bluebridge terminals

Wellington and Picton
There is space to park up and wait for your ferry sailing at both terminals. There is no long term parking available on site but there are plenty of parking options in Wellington city and, in Picton, there is the Marlborough Sounds Storage option detailed directly above.

Q7. How many bags can I take on a ferry?

Hand Baggage
Small hand baggage can be taken onboard ferries at the owner's risk.

Checked-in baggage
Larger baggage, including backpacks, must be checked-in at the Wellington or Picton terminals. Baggage can then be collected from the carousels at the arrival port. For the Interislander, the allowance is two pieces of baggage per person, weighing up to 32kg per item and no more than 200 linear cm (height + length + width). For Bluebridge, the allowance is two pieces of baggage per person, weighing up to 30kg in total. Excess baggage may be conveyed subject to availability and excess charges but, on the Interislander ferries, baggage exceeding 50kg or 350 linear cm will not be accepted.

Q8. Can I take my pet on the ferry?

Yes, you can take your pet on the ferry.

  • Guide dogs may remain in the company of blind persons. There is no charge for a guide dog.
  • Dogs can be placed in dog kennels. Passengers place their dogs in the kennels themselves. There are a limited number of kennels therefore it is necessary to book early. There is a small charge for a kennel - NZ$15 on the Interislander and NZ$10 on Bluebridge. The kennels are located on the rail deck of Interislander ferries. Please bring a blanket, as this will make the dog more comfortable on the steel kennel floor.
  • Dogs and other animals remaining in their owners vehicle will not be charged (excludes extreme cases such as campervans taking cattle, horses, sheep etc). Animals must remain in the vehicle throughout the journey and have fresh water available to them.

Q9. How far in advance can I book?

Ferry reservations are generally open six months in advance. If you are traveling at Easter, Labour Day, or over New Zealand's summer holiday period (from mid-December to the end of February), you should book as soon as you know your approximate travel dates. If they change, you can always amend them free of charge.

Q10. How do I change my New Zealand ferry booking?

Providing the change is made with the same ferry company originally booked and the same fare type is available, your reservation can be changed once for no additional charge. Any subsequent changes made with Experience New Zealand Travel, will incur an amendment fee of NZ$15.00 per change. Changes can only be made with the ferry company originally booked. Changes from Bluebridge to Interislander or vice versa will incur cancellation fees for the original sailing booked. You can amend or change your booking by emailing us at travel@experiencenz.com with your new ferry sailing time preference or any other booking amendments. Please be aware that any changes must be made at least 24 hours prior to the time of check-in, otherwise changes cannot be made. Q11. How do I cancel my ferry booking and what are the cancellation costs?

Cancellations made more than 24 hours prior to the time of check-in will incur a 50% cancellation fee.

Unfortunately cancellations made within the 24 hour period prior to your check-in time are 100% non-refundable. For all urgent cancellations please call Experience New Zealand Travel on 04 473 4470 or if you are calling after office hours a staff member can be reached on the following cell phone number: 021 149 1501.
