Canterbury
Canterbury is a collection of nine different districts on the East coast of New Zealand's South Island with the main city Christchurch being the gateway to the region. The districts include Kaikoura, Hurunui, Waimakariri, Banks Peninsula, Ashburton, Selwyn, Mackenzie, Timaru and Waimate. Because of its huge size, Canterbury is impossible to ignore - mountains, rivers and coastal plains aplenty!
The highlights of this region include the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park where glaciers cover 40% of its area and are a haven for climbers and hikers, the Alpine Pacific Triangle Touring Route where you will travel through the gourmet setting of Waipara, the spa setting of Hanmer Springs and the marine setting of Kaikoura and last but not least the Akaora Harbour and Banks Peninsula which were formed by volcanic eruptions. In Akaroa you can enjoy fine cuisine and activities such as swimming with the Hector dolphin - the world's smallest and rarest dolphin.
