Taranaki
Described by Abel Tasman in 1642 as "the noblest hill I've ever seen", Mount Taranaki with its snow capped volcanic cone is the namesake and spiritual centre of the region. Meaning "gliding peak" in the Maori language, legend has it that Taranaki fell in love with the wife of Mt Tongariro, called Pihanga, and was banished for this from the centre of the North Island of New Zealand, where the other great volcanoes live, to reside now on the lower west coast.
Those who travel to Taranaki will find a natural playground perfect for those looking for adventure activities in the outdoors. With many rivers and streams sourced in the area, unique endemic plant life, and the Tasman Sea bordering, you can find quality accommodation in all sorts of stunning surroundings. This beauty has inspired some great artists, and galleries dot the roadsides you will travel through.
