Wanaka
Lake Wanaka lies at the heart of the Southern Lakes, in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand. The township is situated at the gateway to the Mount Aspiring National Park which is a world heritage area. The village of Wanaka is situated on the gently sloping lakeshore and is compact, so all amenities are within easy walking distance from each other. Wanaka is easily accessible by road and is only one hours travel from Queenstown over the spectacular Crown Range Road.
Wanaka has a permanent population of around 5000 which increases to about 7000 during the height of winter and summer. There is a generous selection of accommodation ranging from B&B's to internationally rated hotels, apartments and lodges. Many people use Wanaka as a base for many outdoor activities including fly fishing, scenic flights, river kayaking, horseback riding, mountain biking, jet boating and walking.
