West Coast
The West Coast of the Southern Alps spans 600 kilometres and is no wider than 70 kilometres at any point. This is a region isolated from the rest of New Zealand by the Southern Alps with a population of only 31,000 people. It boasts five of New Zealand's fourteen national parks (Kahurangi, Paparoa, Arthur's Pass, Westland and Mt Aspiring) along with the South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.
There are opportunities to see wildlife such as Fur Seal colonies, Kiwi, the White Heron (Kotuku), Penguins, Dolphins and unique alpine flora; Rata, Kowhai, Nikau palms and diverse wetlands. It is like you have stepped back in time 1000 years ago. The West Coast is a rugged and primeval region, an adventure and outdoor wonderland with caving, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, surfing, jet boating, jet skiing, glacier walks, scenic flights, mountain biking, horse treks, fishing and gold panning just some of the activities you can enjoy on the West Coast.
